With an area of 7,889 sq. kilometers, Dolpa is the largest district of Nepal, and yet it is the most thinly populated. Dolpa contains the deepest lake of Nepal, Lake Phoksundo, which is also the deepest lake of high altitude in the world. Due to the absence of rainfall in the Dolpa region, most of the hills are bare with little vegetation. Despite having barren landscapes, Dolpa’s majestic mountains provide rare beauty that is truly unique. Because of the harsh living conditions, few people live or travel in these areas. As a result, Dolpa is very remote and isolated, where life still revolves around horses, mules, and yaks. People still wear traditional Tibetan attire and jewelry even today in the region, and practice Bön, the indigenous religion of Tibet that predates Buddhism by centuries.
Trekkers who are thinking of hiking in these remote Himalayan mountains encounter Dho Tarap, one of the highest inhabited human settlements in the world, as well as Mt. Dhaulagiri (27,000 ft) via the Numa La High Pass (18,000 ft).
